You Suck at Public Speaking!

Imagine this: A room full of not only your peers but also influencers who can make your life better. You stand in front of them as they wait for you to say something cool and insightful. Inside your brain, you imagine yourself to be as awe-inspiring as Oprah, funny like Ellen and as charismatic as Will Smith.

You know exactly what you want to say and push it out. You connect ideas with words until you see the blank and unimpressed expressions on the faces of your audience. They smile politely until you’re done. Afterwards you reflect on everything and regret not saying what you came there to say. “Shoot I forgot to say this!” And “Dang it I rambled too much!”

There are a ton of folks who genuinely have a fear of speaking publicly and I have a lot of sympathy for them. However, there are others (and you’re probably one of them) that have no fear whatsoever. You gusty, ballsy, bold individuals were probably some of the first people to volunteer to speak in class. On group projects you were the one volun-told to present the project and you did it with ease.

However, just like the people who are scared to death of public speaking: You Suck Too!!!

Gasp!!! How is that even possible?! Let me tell you honey chile, it’s possible. You’ve gotten over with your charm. You’ve skated through with your wit. And now you and the ones with sweaty palms are at a crossroad together.

How do I suck? Why do I suck? Well you don’t have suck for much longer!

In today’s episode I will show why you suck and how sucking can be a part of your past.

Don’t worry we all suck from time to time but knowing some key ideas about public speaking will put you on a path with out sucky-speed bumps.

    As someone who deals with anxiety, struggles with public speaking on all levels, and one that just plain sucks at public speaking because I pronounce things wrong and strange….the video only added more pressure and anxiety. Now, everytime I open my mouth I am going to be hyper vigilant and nervous about talking because I am going to remember, “everytime I open my mouth I am public speaking.” How do I work on that?

      Imagine the times that you’re just talking to a friend, telling a story of something funny that happened at work or even reminiscing on a good time you shared together. You both laugh and smile at what was said. Consider that to be a successful moment of public speaking. You spoke positively, connected with your audience (your friend) and walked away feeling good about expressing yourself. Considering that every time you speak you’re public speaking…you have more instances of speaking well in public than you think you do.

    I suck at public speaking!
    I’m definitely going to take your advise immediately.
    I still can’t understand how I’m such a “people person” and outgoing in group settings yet when it’s time to speak in front of a large group…
    I go blank.
